Samsung Posts Solid Net Profit as Chip Business Rebounds Strongly
By Kwanwoo Jun
Samsung Electronics posted a solid third-quarter net profit as its flagship semiconductor business bounced back strongly, supported by an artificial-intelligence boom fueling chip demand.
The world's largest maker of memory chips and smartphones said Thursday that its semiconductor earnings rebounded after four straight quarters of declines, signaling a comeback for the division, as the South Korean tech giant looks to catch up with rivals in the advanced AI chip race.
Net profit was 12.226 trillion won, equivalent to $8.57 billion, for the three months ended September, up 21% from a year earlier. That was more than double the prior quarter's figure and well above market views.
Analysts had expected a profit of 9.796 trillion won, according to a FactSet-compiled consensus.
Revenue rose 8.8% to 86.062 trillion won. Operating profit climbed 32% to 12.166 trillion won. Both figures were largely in line with the company's preliminary estimates.
Earnings from its chip segment were 7.0 trillion won, a sharp increase from the previous quarter's 400 billion won.
Its smartphone business also fared well, with the segment's operating profit rising 16% on quarter to 3.6 trillion won.
Shares in Samsung were up 4.3% at 104,800 won after the quarterly results. The stock has climbed more than 90% so far this year.
