HCA Lifts Outlook as 3Q Profit, Revenue Rise

HCA Healthcare lifted its full-year outlook after logging higher profit and revenue in the third quarter, as same-facility admissions grew.

The Nashville, Tenn., hospital owner and operation said earnings are now on track to come in between $6.5 billion and $6.72 billion, or $27 to $28 a share. It had previously guided for a profit of $6.11 billion to $6.48 billion, or $25.50 to $27 a share.

The company now expects revenue of $75 billion to $76.5 billion, up from its prior outlook of $74 billion to $76 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of $26.33 on revenue of $75 billion.

The new outlook came as HCA posted a profit of $1.64 billion, or $6.96 a share, for its three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $1.27 billion, or $4.88 a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, adjusted earnings were also $6.96 a share. Analysts were looking for $5.72 a share.

Revenue rose 9.6% to $19.16 billion, topping the $18.57 billion that Wall Street modeled.

Same-facility admissions increased 2.1% during the quarter. Chief Executive Sam Hazen said the company is continuing its work to increase access to healthcare, invest in advanced technologies and train its workers.

Shares rose 2% to $449.05 in premarket trading.
