Materials Up After Strong Earnings Offset Precious Metals Slump — Materials Roundup

Producers of metals and other raw materials rose after strong earnings offset a slump in precious metals.

Gold futures slid by the largest increment in 12 years as a long run-up came to an abrupt halt. Gold plunged $248.70 per troy ounce, or 5.7%, to close at $4087.70 an ounce.

Gold miners' losses were even more severe, with Barrick Gold and Newmont both losing more than 8% and others, such as Kinross Gold, incurring bigger losses still.

Steel Dynamics surged after the steelmaker logged increased third-quarter earnings and volumes.

Cleveland-Cliffs gave back the bulk of its recent gains after analysts at brokerage Wells Fargo said "vague" announcements about rare-earth prospects in Michigan and Minnesota mines did not justify the iron-ore miner's surge.
