Roche's Genentech to Offer Flu Medicine at Lower Price in Direct-to-Patient Program
By Kelly Cloonan
Genentech plans to offer its flu medicine at a lower price through its first direct-to-patient program as the Trump administration pushes for more affordable U.S. drug prices.
Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, said Thursday it will offer its Xofluza medication for $50, which is 70% lower than the drug's list price, via partnerships with Alto Pharmacy and Cost Plus Drugs.
Same-day home delivery will also be available in select markets through Alto Pharmacy and Amazon Pharmacy.
The initiative aims to reduce costs for people who don't have insurance, have limited coverage or whose health plans don't cover Xofluza. It also supports President Trump's goal to make medicines more affordable for American patients, Genentech said.
"Expanding our distribution for Xofluza will allow us to reach more patients where they are increasingly interested in seeking their medicines," Chief Executive Ashley Magargee said.
Xofluza is a single-dose oral antiviral medication used to treat the flu in patients ages five and up as well as those who have been exposed to the flu.
