Asahi Says Unclear When Production, Shipping Will Resume After Cyberattack

By Megumi Fujikawa

Japan's top beer maker remains hamstrung by a cyberattack that has ensnarled its local production and shipping operations.

"We are still unable to receive orders or ship products," an Asahi Group spokesperson said on Friday, four days after it said that it had suspended order and shipment operations at group companies in Japan.

"Although the production systems at our factories have not been affected by the cyberattack, production has been suspended at many Asahi Group factories in Japan due to the inability to ship goods," the spokesperson said.

Asahi has approximately 30 factories in Japan for alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and food products.

There's no clear outlook for when production and shipping will resume, said the brewer, which makes Japan's most popular beer, Asahi Super Dry.

As an emergency measure, it accepted orders manually for a limited selection of products--including Super Dry--on Wednesday, with deliveries scheduled for Friday or later.

It was still manually accepting limited orders for soft drinks and food products as of Friday. For alcoholic beverages, it is prioritizing the shipment of orders received on Wednesday, and hasn't accepted any new orders.

The company is reviewing future plans for accepting alcohol orders, the spokesperson said.
