Aetna and Humana to Pull Back on Medicare Advantage Plans

By Nicholas G. Miller

Humana and CVS Health's Aetna will reduce the reach of their Medicare Advantage plans next year as health insurance companies face rising costs.

Aetna said it would offer Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans in 43 states and Washington D.C., one fewer than this year. Humana said it would have Medicare Advantage plans in 46 states and Washington D.C., down from 48 this year.

Aetna's plans will be accessible to 57 million Medicare-eligible beneficiaries, down from 59 million this year. Humana, which currently has Medicare Advantage plans in 89% of counties, will cover only 85% of U.S. counties next year.

Insurers have been pulling back from less profitable Medicare Advantage markets as they face higher utilization of medical services and increased costs as a result. Insurers have claimed that government payments have not kept up with rising costs.
