AES Shares Rise Premarket on Report of Possible Takeover by BlackRock

By Colin Kellaher

Shares of AES rose sharply in premarket trading following a published report that BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners is nearing a deal to buy the power company.

The Financial Times, citing people briefed on the matter, reported that talks on a deal, worth around $38 billion including AES's massive debt load, are at an advanced stage.

The FT report didn't indicate a possible per-share takeover price.

AES sports a market capitalization of around $9.37 billion based on Tuesday's closing price of $13.16. Shares of the Arlington, Va., company were recently up nearly 14% to $14.95 in premarket trading.

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, bought private-equity firm GIP last year for roughly $12.5 billion in cash and stock.
