SAP Faces EU Antitrust Probe Over Business Management Software
By Mauro Orru
The European Union launched a formal investigation into Germany's SAP, saying the company might have stifled competition for maintenance and support services of its popular business-management software.
The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said it would probe possible anticompetitive practices related to SAP's Enterprise Resource Planning software that companies use for corporate finance, human resources and project management. The software can be provided on-premises, when it runs on clients' own servers, or through the cloud, when it is hosted on SAP's servers.
EU officials said SAP requires customers to seek maintenance and support services from SAP for their on-premises ERP software, potentially restricting competition from third-party providers. The commission also said SAP prevents customers from terminating maintenance and support services for unused software licenses, meaning clients might be paying for unwanted services.
"Thousands of companies across Europe use SAP's software to run their business, as well as its related maintenance and support services," EU competition chief Teresa Ribera said in a statement. "We are concerned that SAP may have restricted competition in this crucial aftermarket, by making it harder for rivals to compete, leaving European customers with fewer choices and higher costs."
SAP didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The company can submit commitments to address the EU's concerns.
