Eli Lilly to Build $6.5 Billion Ingredient-Manufacturing Facility in Texas

By Katherine Hamilton

Eli Lilly said it plans to build a $6.5 billion facility in Houston to make active pharmaceutical ingredients, including a new oral weight-loss drug.

The plant will bring 615 jobs to the Houston area, including engineers and lab technicians, as well as 4,000 construction jobs while it is being built, the company said Tuesday.

Eli Lilly plans to manufacture orforglipron, its first oral, small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, at the facility. The company expects to submit orforglipron to global regulatory agencies as a treatment for people with obesity by the end of this year.

The planned site, which is expected to be operational within five years, is the second of four manufacturing sites in the U.S. that the Indianapolis pharmaceutical company plans to announce this year. Earlier this year, the company said it plans to expand its medicine production in the U.S. It is also building a site in Virginia.
