Amazon Aims to Shut Amazon Fresh U.K. Physical Stores
By Aimee Look
Amazon aims to close its brick-and-mortar Amazon Fresh U.K. stores, as the e-commerce giant leans instead into online delivery and its Whole Foods Market brand.
The company said Tuesday it had launched a consultation with employees regarding the potential closure of 14 Amazon Fresh stores and the conversion of five others into Whole Foods Market locations. The talks comes after it evaluated operations and found lucrative growth opportunities in online delivery, the company said.
Amazon said it aims to offer alternative positions within the company to employees impacted by the store closures.
"In case of closure, our goal is to offer redeployment opportunities to as many affected employees as possible," Amazon said.
Whole Foods Market will have a total of 12 stores in the U.K. after the conversion of the five Fresh sites, it said.
