Toronto Stocks Advance, Capital Power Rises on Power Supply Deal in Michigan

By Adriano Marchese

Toronto stocks rose thanks to a broad-based push by most sectors in Canada.

Among the biggest gainers Thursday were commercial services, tech services and utilities stocks. Of the few declining sectors, communications, materials and consumer services were the main laggards.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.5% to 29463.58 and the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 advanced by 0.6% to 1744.77.

On the national front, Canada's government is expected to spend 159 billion Canadian dollars ($115.4 billion) on infrastructure projects over the next five years, according to estimates by the Parliamentary Budget Office.

Capital Power's stock rose by 5% to C$64.40 a share after announcing a more lucrative long-term power supply contract with Consumers Energy to supply power in Michigan.

Other market movers:

Shares in Pollard Banknote rose by over 10% to C$21.85 after it was selected to provide its gaming platform to the national lottery of Belgium.

NanoXplore shares advanced by 7.5% to C$3.01 after it said signed a contract to supply a proprietary carbon product to Chevron Phillips Chemical.

High Liner Foods shares rose 3.5% after BMO analysts upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform on the back of the company's transition back to a period of revenue growth which should drive stock price performance.
