FTC Sues Ticketmaster Alleging Illegal Ticket Resale Tactics

By Nicholas G. Miller

The Federal Trade Commission and seven states sued Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation, alleging Ticketmaster engaged in illegal ticket resale tactics that cost consumers billions of dollars.

Ticketmaster coordinated with brokers to collect millions of dollars worth of tickets and then sell those tickets at a significant markup in the secondary market, the FTC said in a statement Thursday.

Ticketmaster also advertised lower prices than consumers actually had to pay, deceptively claimed to have limits on the number of tickets consumers could buy and allowed brokers to sell tickets on its platform that they had obtained in excess of limits on purchases, the FTC claimed.

The FTC is seeking civil penalties against Ticketmaster and any additional monetary relief the court deems appropriate. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
