China Youth Jobless Rate Hits Record High Under New Methodology
China's youth unemployment rate climbed to a record high under Beijing's revised data methodology that excludes students, according to official figures released Wednesday.
The jobless rate for 16- to 24-year-olds rose to 18.9% in August, up from 17.8% in July and surpassing the previous peak of 18.8% set in August 2024, the National Bureau of Statistics said.
China's statistics bureau suspended the release of the youth unemployment rate in June 2023, after it surged to a record high of 21.3%. It later revised its methodology to exclude young people still studying at universities or other schools.
Data under the new methodology have been released since December 2023, and the jobless rate still hit high levels during the summer graduation season despite the change.
In August, the urban unemployment rate across all age groups edged up to 5.3% from 5.2% in July, according to the statistics bureau.
