Health-care companies rose sharply as traders rotated back into the beaten-down sector.
Centene shares soared after the health insurer reiterated its July growth projections and issued an encouraging update at an investor conference. Rivals such as UnitedHealth Group rose in sympathy amid hopes that Centene's outlook indicated stability had returned to the managed-care industry after an extended period of upheaval that had included a steady stream of earnings-growth warnings and reports of legal probes.
Biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie rallied after striking a deal with generic drugmakers, extending patent protection for its blockbuster autoimmune drug Rinvoq to April 2037.
