WestJet Adds 67 Aircraft to Boeing Order

By Adriano Marchese

Canadian airline WestJet is nearly doubling its order of Boeing jets as the company looks to expand its domestic and international network.

WestJet, which is owned by Canadian investment firm Onex, said Wednesday that it is buying 67 more jets from aerospace giant Boeing to bring its firm order book to 123 airplanes.

The order will be made up of 60 737-10 jets and options for 25 more as well as seven 787-9 jets with the option to add four more.

"With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet has the largest order book of any airline in Canada, and will double our fleet of Dreamliners, underpinning our growth plans and our commitment to affordable travel options," said WestJet Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech.

WestJet began operations in 1996 with three Boeing 737 aircraft, which has grown to a fleet of nearly 150 Boeing 737s today. The airline also operates both the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX on its long-haul routes, and said that with this order, it will add to its fleet the new 787-9s to fly to destinations in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Boeing is currently under intense scrutiny on multiple fronts, with mounting pressure from regulators, lawmakers, families of crash victims, as well as the general public. The most recent hit to its reputation came after a fatal Air India 787-8 Dreamliner crash in June of this year, the first deadly accident involving that model.

Meanwhile, there continues to be other issues that include structural flaws in the narrow-body 737 MAX aircraft and panel defects in newer aircraft, which have raised alarms over Boeing's manufacturing oversight.
