Volkswagen in Talks With SAIC About Operational Changes in Xinjiang Amid Forced Labor Allegations
By David Sachs
Volkswagen is negotiating with joint-venture partner SAIC Motor about possible changes to operations in Xinjiang Province following accusations of forced labor.
"The Volkswagen Group is currently in talks with the non-controlled joint venture SAIC-Volkswagen regarding the future direction of the JV's business activities in Xinjiang Province," the company said. "Various scenarios are currently being examined intensively."
The German carmaker and the Chinese state-owned auto manufacturer have a joint venture with a factory in Xinjiang. Accusations of forced labor prompted an audit commissioned by Volkswagen that the carmaker said in December found no evidence of forced labor.
