Saab Gets $524 Million Order From Sweden for New Systems in Gripen Fighter Jets

By Dominic Chopping

STOCKHOLM--Saab said Tuesday it has agreed to add new functionality and adjust the delivery schedules for Gripen E and Gripen C/D fighter jets to Sweden, in a deal worth around 5.8 billion Swedish kronor ($523.5 million).

Sweden ordered 60 Gripen E jets in 2013 and has updated the specifications of the aircraft several times, as well deciding in 2020 to extend the lifetime of its Gripen C/D jets with updated components.

Tuesday's agreement will see Saab add new equipment such as electronic warfare, communication and reconnaissance systems to the aircraft and at the same time adjust development and delivery plans to enable the continued development and operation of Gripen C/D after 2030 in parallel with the introduction of the next generation Gripen E fighter.
