Airbus, STMicroelectronics to Cooperate on Aircraft Semiconductors

By Andrea Figueras

Airbus said Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with STMicroelectronics to explore the benefits of wide bandgap semiconductor materials for aircraft electrification.

The European plane maker will cooperate with the chip manufacturer on researching and developing semiconductors like silicon carbide and gallium nitride, which are more power-efficient than traditional semiconductors like silicon.

Wide bandgap semiconductors enable the development of smaller, lighter and more efficient high-performance electronic devices and systems, especially for high-power, high-frequency or high-temperature operations.

The agreement will contribute to the transition to hybrid and full-electric systems of urban air vehicles as part of Airbus's electrification roadmap.

Airbus didn't provide further details on the cooperation agreement.
