By Adriano Marchese

Stocks in Toronto were slightly lower midday Friday. Sector performance in Canada was mixed, with process industries, energy and health tech the main laggards, offset by gains primarily in consumer discretionary, consumer durables and commercial services.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 0.13% to 20000.65 and the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 fell by 0.14% to 1203.82.

European Residential Real Estate Investment Trust shares were 1.4% higher at 2.95 Canadian dollars ($2.23) after it said it launched a strategic review and has hired a commercial real-estate services and investment firm to advise it in the process.

Other market movers:

Manulife Financial has appointed Phil Witherington as president and chief executive of the company's Asia unit as it looks to accelerate growth in the region. Shares were down 1.1% at C$24.26.
