New Data From 3.2 Million Law Firm Calls Reveals What Converts Callers Into Clients
Smith.ai's Legal Intake Report finds instant scheduling is the biggest lever law firms aren't using and hybrid AI-and-human intake delivers impressive results at a lower cost
Smith.ai, the legal tech company changing the front office for law firms, today released The Legal Intake Report, an analysis of over three million law firm calls, the largest dataset of its kind on legal client intake. The report finds that two out of three qualified leads hang up without a defined next step, leaving a firm’s best prospective clients free to take their case elsewhere. Nearly 6 in 10 firms are missing the one thing that would close that door.
The report identifies instant scheduling as the single biggest function separating high-converting firms from the rest. Firms that offer real-time appointment booking to qualified leads convert 64% of the time, a rate that holds steady even after business hours. Firms without it see conversion fall to just 12%, and to 7% after hours — a meaningful gap given that roughly one in five calls to a law firm comes in after hours.
"This data confirms what we've believed for years, that intake is the sales function most law firms don't realize they're running, and that most of them are running it poorly," said Suresh Khanna, CEO of Smith.ai. "When firms give potential clients a way to schedule a consultation instantly, they lock-in those leads and win more clients."
The report also offers a data-backed look at how AI and human agents each perform in legal intake. Human-only agents booked the most qualified leads, at 59%. Hybrid AI-and-human agents followed closely at 52%, at a fraction of the cost of live-agent service, while AI-only intake, with no human agents involved, booked 33% of qualified leads.
The Legal Intake Report's findings include:
- Hybrid delivers strong value. At more than 50% lower cost than live-agent-only service, hybrid intake gives up just 6.5 points of booking rate compared to human-only, a trade-off that lets firms invest in a premium intake partner.
- Every practice area benefits from offering scheduled consultations. Estate planning firms secure a next step with about half of their qualified leads; personal injury firms, about one in five. But across every practice area, firms that offer qualified leads a scheduled consultation convert at least thirty points better than non-scheduling firms.
- Seven to nine screening questions is the aim. Top-converting firms balance thoroughness and efficiency with a set of questions that take about 6 minutes to answer, preventing both drawn-out calls and loosely screened leads.
The Legal Intake Report draws on Smith.ai's decade of experience and more than 30 million calls handled across its legal client base, combining AI Receptionist and Virtual Receptionist call data with human agent performance from Smith.ai's network of more than 500 North America-based live agents.
