A Handful of Manager Changes on American Funds SMALLCAP World; Ratings Unchanged

Analyst Note

American Funds’ parent Capital Group announced that manager Michael Beckwith and Harold La will depart the management team of American Funds SMALLCAP World on Aug. 1, 2023. At that time, firm veterans Taylor Hinshaw, Akira Horiguchi, and Piyada Phanaphat will officially join the management team, bringing the total number of named managers to 19. These changes do not alter the strategy’s High People Pillar rating or its Morningstar Medalist Ratings, but they do illustrate the firm’s methodical approach to adding investment talent. This is the first public announcement of both Hinshaw and Horiguchi to money management roles. Hinshaw has been managing a relatively small portion of assets as an undisclosed manager on this strategy for five years, something Capital Group does regularly when adding managers to strategies. He has spent 21 of his 25 years in the industry at Capital Group, where he has covered U.S. thrift and mortgage finance, consumer finance, insurance, mortgage REITS, and convertible securities. Hinshaw focuses on companies with attractive business models, revenue tailwinds, and strong balance sheets that are typically out of favor with the market. Horiguchi has served as an undisclosed manager on the strategy for the past five years and has spent 22 of his 29 years in the industry at Capital Group. As an analyst, Horiguchi covered Japanese small- and mid-cap companies. Horiguchi seeks companies with durable pricing power as the main driver of growth. This isn’t Phanaphat’s first management role. She has served as comanager on American Funds New World NEWFX for more than three years and as an undisclosed manager on the strategy for the past two years. She has spent 15 of her 20 years in the industry at Capital Group. She focuses on companies with strong revenue, growth, expanding margins, and high or improving returns on capital.
