Steve Rossi left American Century and stepped down as comanager on American Century Disciplined Core Value, American Century Equity Growth, and American Century Small Company on March 31, 2023. Yulin Long, already a comanager on Disciplined Core Value, joined lead manager Arun Daniel on the two other strategies. This team has seen considerable turnover in recent years. The firm is on its third quantitative CIO since 2017, three long-tenured portfolio managers left the team in 2020, and four more team members departed in 2021-22. Daniel, who joined in April 2022 to oversee portfolio management on the team, expected to hire a quantitative analyst plus an analyst or manager with both fundamental and quantitative skills to join the team. A fundamental analyst joined in 2022 to aid Daniel in the team’s new “fundamental overlay,” which allows for stock- and industry-specific fundamental insights to identify potential risks and trump picks made by the team’s quantitative models. This team, which was already fairly small, is down two managers, a quant analyst and a fundamental analyst. But its process remains predominantly quantitative, so it should be able to make do until new hires arrive. Despite Rossi’s departure, the Morningstar Medalist Ratings remain Neutral.
