Analyst Note

Longtime AB Income co-lead portfolio manager and credit specialist Gershon Distenfeld will retire at year-end 2026, paving the way for rates expert Scott DiMaggio to take over as the sole lead and quant veteran Sonam Dorji to become a named manager. The strategy retains its Average People rating because of its mixed success in the kind of risk-on credit environments it aims to outperform in. The strategy will be less tenured following Distenfeld’s retirement, but experience remains a plus here. DiMaggio, for example, has managed the fund since early 2019 and worked at AB for nearly three decades. Comanagers Matthew Sheridan and Fahd Malik, who joined the roster in April 2016 and February 2022, respectively, both spent the majority of their more than 20-year careers at AB. The day-to-day management duties have long rested on Sheridan and Malik, who will now absorb most of Distenfeld’s responsibilities as well, and Dorji’s quant expertise could help the fund improve its record in credit rallies. She joined AB in 2012 and has developed interest rate and multisector asset allocation models. She has also worked closely with Malik for two years and will have a yearlong transition before officially becoming a manager on this strategy.
