A Downgrade for Oakmark International
Oakmark International’s OAKIX People Pillar was recently downgraded to Above Average from High, dropping its Morningstar Medalist Rating to Silver from Gold.
The downgrade partially reflects succession, which looms large here. Renowned investor David Herro has led the strategy since 1992, the same year he joined Chicago-based advisor Harris Associates. Herro remains closely involved with the offering, but he is in the advanced stage of his career, making it prudent to consider the strategy’s future in other hands.
The firm has been thoughtful about succession, but that plan was recently disrupted. Comanager Michael Manelli will step away from portfolio-management duties on July 1 and then retire at the end of 2025 for personal reasons. A member of the firm since 2005, Manelli is leaving unexpectedly in the prime of his career, and his experience and investment acumen will surely be missed.
To shore up the international team’s leadership, the firm tapped a longtime US leader. Tony Coniaris was named co-chief investment officer of international equities alongside Herro effective April 1, and he will take Manelli’s spot on the manager roster on July 1. Coniaris has been a manager on Oakmark Global and Global Select since 2016, though he’s historically focused on US stocks for those portfolios, so there’s more to learn.
Despite these changes, the team remains formidable. Comanager Eric Liu (who also serves on Global and Global Select) continues to round out the manager roster. Herro, Coniaris, and Liu will still be supported by nine other international teammates (plus a few research associates).

A Small, Experienced Team
Allspring Core Bond Institutional MBFIX earned a People Pillar upgrade to Above Average from Average, boosting its Morningstar Medalist Rating to Bronze from Neutral.
A veteran duo of Maulik Bhansali and Jarad Vasquez, managers here since October 2017, have led the fund since December 2020. They bring experience in structured products and quantitative modeling, respectively, and have demonstrated strong decision-making over their tenure, driving the upgrade.
A small fundamental analyst team supports the managers, but their stability and experience make up for size. This analyst group averages more than 20 years of industry experience and consists of eight sector managers, four traders, and two quantitative analysts. While smaller than many intermediate-core bond Morningstar Category peers, the team’s significant sector expertise and team continuity support a collaborative team environment.

A Distinct and Flexible Approach
Capital Group Core Equity ETF’s CGUS flexible approach helps it stand out against most peers. Increased confidence in this exchange-traded fund’s ability to successfully employ its mandate merits a Process Pillar upgrade to Above Average from Average.
A healthy mix of dividend-paying and growth stocks creates a diversified portfolio across sectors and industries. The managers create a broad investment universe of stocks by pulling the eligibility lists from three other large-cap strategies at the firm.
In typical Capital Group multimanager fashion, each of the four comanagers on this strategy runs their own sleeve, allowing them to stick with their highest-conviction picks. This combination of sleeves can help mute the ETF’s volatility. The managers’ long-term orientation results in modest portfolio turnover. The managers will hold more cash when investment opportunities are limited, which also keeps the fund’s volatility in check.
