Shin-Etsu Chemical Sees More Durable Growth in Advanced Semiconductor Materials and PVC

Shin-Etsu Chemical is a chemicals supplier with exposure spanning electronics, PVC, and pharmaceuticals. Unlike peers, it has shunned spinoffs and instead integrated more niches into various supply chains. It may arise from a long-term-oriented view where sharing know-how and cross-disciplinary cooperation trump short-term financial gains. There are two common avenues to expanding Shin-Etsu’s product portfolio to improve efficiency: repurposing chemical byproducts in new processes, like using gases from the PVC chain in purifying silicon; and integrating upstream to ensure the supply of raw materials, like cracking ethylene in-house using natural gas for its PVC operations.
