Tractor Supply Earnings: Resilient Performance Amid Sluggish Market Landscape; Shares Rich

Wide-moat Tractor Supply closed its fiscal third quarter amid persistent industrywide challenges, including stifled discretionary goods spending and deflation in retail pet categories, which continued to pinch average unit retail prices. Even with these pressures, the firm delivered a mere 0.2% decline in comparable sales, consistent with our forecast for stagnant growth, and it continues to outpace the broader farm and ranch retail sector, where management estimates a decline in the low to mid-single digits. We’re pleased with Tractor Supply’s above-average showing in big-ticket sales despite the tough consumer backdrop, aided by an improved product selection and an ability to engage its 37 million loyalty customers to cross-sell needs-based items within its one-stop-shop-model—all key advantages over smaller regional peers and a primary factor that propped up quarterly sales. Still, driven by lackluster comparable sales growth, a higher mix of lower-margin big-ticket items, and lingering distribution center onboarding costs, operating margin fell 60 basis points to 9.4%, edging our 9.2% estimate.
