Brunswick Earnings: Firm Continues to Launch New Products to Entice Consumers Despite Weak Macro

Narrow-moat Brunswick couldn’t escape the widespread softness in industry demand across the marine landscape. The firm’s third-quarter revenue decline of 20% was primarily affected by a 32% downtick in its propulsion segment and a 19% decrease in the boat business, while Navico and engine parts and accessories booked less severe declines. While the metrics appear dire, they aren’t very different from other manufacturers that are positioning their dealer inventory defensively in response to a challenging consumer environment. Like its peers, Brunswick saw massive cost deleveraging of 450 basis points, leading to an adjusted operating margin of 9.9% as wholesale and retail buyers remain stalled.
