Schwartz

Schwartz Parent Rating

Average

The Ave Maria funds are advised by Schwartz Investment Counsel.

The firm had just under$ 3 billion in assets under management as of March 31, 2023, the bulk of it invested according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic church. Those funds ca n't hold any stocks having to do with abortion, birth control, or embryonic stem cells; any companies that make or distribute pornography, broadly defined; or any company that contributes money to Planned Parenthood. A Catholic advisory board decides which investments are consistent with the Catholic screens.

The firm's founder, George Schwartz, is co-portfolio manager of two of the six Ave Maria funds and the secular-minded Schwartz Value Focused RCMFX. Three of his sons work at the firm, including Timothy, who is president of the firm and lead manager of Ave Maria Value AVEMX and Schwartz Value Focused. Of the other two sons, Robert manages accounts for private clients, and Michael is vice president of institutional sales. George Schwartz is the controlling owner of the firm, but his sons and several other senior members of the firm also have ownership stakes.

Expenses have come down a bit in recent years but remain middling. The firm went through an unusual amount of turnover in 2019 and 2020 when two senior people retired, but things have settled down since then. The firm's culture has been stable enough to meet the industry standard for stewardship, so it earns an Average Parent rating.
