Berkshire Hathaway's 13F Filing Highlights a Continued Commitment to Equities in the Second Quarter

Greggory Warren, CFA Sector Strategist

Analyst Note

| Greggory Warren, CFA |

Wide-moat-rated Berkshire Hathaway had a quieter second quarter (relative to the first quarter of 2022) in its equity investment portfolio, with net purchases (exclusive of sales) reaching $3.8 billion during the period (compared with $41.4 billion of net purchases for the firm during the March quarter). Based on the insurer's recent 13F filing (as well as the filing for New England Asset Management, which managed $5.9 billion for Berkshire at the end of June), the sales that stood out the most to us were the elimination of the firm's stake in Royalty Pharma (which we estimate raised around $60 million), a near elimination of Verizon (raising $70 million), and a cutting in half of the company's stake in STORE Capital (which we believe raised $215 million). On top of that, the insurer trimmed back holdings in Kroger (raising $290 million), U.S. Bancorp ($325 million), and General Motors ($345 million), as well as a bunch of other smaller holdings.

Business Description

Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company with a wide array of subsidiaries engaged in diverse activities. The firm's core business segment is insurance, run primarily through Geico, Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group, and Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group. Berkshire has used the excess cash thrown off from these and its other operations over the years to acquire Burlington Northern Santa Fe (railroad), Berkshire Hathaway Energy (utilities and energy distributors), and the firms that make up its manufacturing, service, and retailing operations (which include five of Berkshire's largest noninsurance pretax earnings generators: Precision Castparts, Lubrizol, Clayton Homes, Marmon, and IMC/ISCAR). The conglomerate is unique in that it is run on a completely decentralized basis.
