Transaera to Install Its Heat Pump Against a Conventional System in First Multifamily Residential Deployment

The Massachusetts company's heat pump technology, already deployed across Amazon's logistics network, will now be tested against a conventional system at a Washington, D.C. apartment building.
SOMERVILLE, Mass., Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Transaera, a Massachusetts-based technology company commercializing high-efficiency air conditioning technology, today announced its first multifamily residential installation in Washington, D.C., owned by the nation's largest apartment real estate investment trust. The resulting performance data will be published and made available to other building owners.
Global demand for air conditioning is expected to nearly triple by midcentury, to roughly 18,000 terawatt-hours a year, more electricity than the U.S., China, India, Germany and Japan currently use combined. Transaera's products are already running across Amazon's logistics network under a multiyear agreement signed after a successful six-month field trial.
Buildings account for 71% of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington, D.C., according to the city's Department of Energy and Environment. The city's Building Energy Performance Standards require privately owned buildings of 50,000 square feet or more to meet minimum energy performance targets by the end of 2026, and the requirement extends to buildings of 25,000 square feet or more in the next compliance cycle, which begins in 2027. The installation will operate alongside a conventional system in the same building, and the data it produces will be published for building owners in Washington and elsewhere who are evaluating all-electric heating and cooling.
Transaera's platform is a heat pump that provides heating and cooling and uses a class of materials called metal-organic frameworks to remove moisture from the air before cooling it. Conventional systems overcool the air well below the target temperature to wring out humidity, then reheat it to the desired setting, using more energy than they need to. Transaera's approach cuts energy required to dehumidify the air and removes that extra reheat cycle. The company reports the design drops seasonal energy use by 40% compared to conventional systems.
"Building owners deciding how to electrify need operating cost reduction and want to see performance data from a building like theirs before they commit," said Sorin Grama, CEO and co-founder of Transaera. "This project lets us prove, with independent data, that a more efficient system works as well to properly condition a whole apartment building as it does in an Amazon warehouse. Working with the largest apartment owner in the country means those results will go directly to the people making these decisions."
The project is supported by a $125,000 grant from the National Deployment Grant Fund of The Clean Fight, a New York-based nonprofit that funds early deployments of proven clean energy technologies.
About Transaera
Transaera sells complete heat pump systems for commercial and multifamily buildings and supports customers from installation through ongoing maintenance. Its systems use metal-organic frameworks to remove humidity from the air before cooling it, which the company reports cuts energy use by up to 40% compared to conventional systems. Transaera systems are operating across Amazon's logistics network under a multiyear agreement, and the company is scaling U.S. production through a manufacturing partnership with KCC Companies. Founded in 2018 by MIT engineers and materials scientists, Transaera is based in Somerville, Massachusetts. To estimate energy savings for a specific building, visit savings.transaera.com.
