7 Halloween Safety Hazards Homeowners Should Check Before Trick-or-Treating

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- With Halloween just around the corner, homeowners are stringing up lights, setting out jack-o'-lanterns, and preparing their yards for a night of trick-or-treaters. But according to Kevin J. Vander Hyde, Vice President of Vander Hyde Services, a few simple safety checks before the big night can help prevent accidents, injuries, and even electrical hazards.

"Halloween decorations bring a lot of joy to families and neighborhoods, but they can also introduce some easy-to-overlook safety risks," said Kevin. "Taking just a few minutes to walk through your yard and check for hazards can make trick-or-treating a lot safer for everyone."
Before Halloween night, make sure to check the following things:
Frayed or Damaged Electrical Cords
Holiday lights and decorations are often stored for a full year before being used again, which can cause cords to crack, fray, or be chewed by pests. Inspect every cord before plugging it in, and replace anything showing exposed wiring or damage.
Overloaded Extension Cords
It's easy to plug too many lights and decorations into a single extension cord. Overloaded cords can overheat and pose a fire hazard, so homeowners should check the cord's rated capacity and avoid daisy-chaining multiple extension cords.
Outdoor Lighting Gaps
Well-lit walkways and porches help trick-or-treaters see where they're stepping. Homeowners should walk their property after dark to identify any dim or unlit areas along the path to the front door and add extra lighting where needed.
Uneven or Obstructed Walkways
Cracked sidewalks, garden hoses, decorations, and low-hanging cords can all become tripping hazards in the dark. Clear walkways of clutter and secure any cords running across a path with tape or cord covers.
Open-Flame Candles
Traditional candles inside jack-o'-lanterns or decorations can easily be knocked over by wind, costumes, or curious trick-or-treaters, creating a fire risk. Battery-operated LED candles offer a similar glow without the open flame.
Unstable Decorations
Inflatable decorations, tall yard displays, and hanging props can tip over or fall in windy conditions. Make sure all decorations are properly staked, weighted, or secured so they won't become a hazard underfoot.
Loose or Exposed Outlets
Outdoor outlets used to power lights and decorations should have functioning weatherproof covers. Exposed or uncovered outlets can pose a shock risk, especially if the ground is wet from rain or dew.
"None of these checks take very long, but they can make a real difference in preventing a trip, a fall, or a fire on a night when there's a lot of foot traffic around the house," Kevin added. "A quick walk-through of your yard before Halloween is one of the easiest ways to keep trick-or-treaters and your own family safe."
