The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has awarded its highest quality ratings to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital for excellence in heart surgery outcomes.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Two MedStar Health hospitals have earned the highest quality designation, a three-star rating, from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), placing their cardiac surgery programs among the nation's best for patient outcomes and surgical care.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center earned prestigious three-star ratings in three categories:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) or heart bypass surgery
  • Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement (MVRR)
  • Multiprocedural Composite Measure (combinations of valve and heart bypass surgeries)

MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore earned three-star ratings in two categories:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
  • Multiprocedural Composite Measure

The STS rating system evaluates benchmarked patient outcomes across U.S. hospitals. It serves as one of healthcare's most respected quality metrics, helping patients and families make informed decisions about where to receive heart surgery.

"These ratings reflect the relentless dedication, skill, and care our surgical teams bring to patients every single day," said Dr. Thomas MacGillivray, physician executive director of Cardiac Surgery at MedStar Health and chair of Cardiac Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. "The STS database is the gold standard for clinical quality. Earning top marks across both hospitals proves our commitment to setting the highest standard of care for our patients."

In 2023, Dr. MacGillivray served as the 59th President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

The latest ratings cover calendar years 2023 through 2025.

The STS National Database contains more than 10 million surgical records from more than 4,300 surgeons and captures more than 95% of adult cardiac surgeries performed in the U.S. The database's nationwide reach makes STS ratings one of the most trusted measures of quality in cardiac surgery.
