Roller-coaster accident at Georgia theme park on Monday leaves one dead

Six Flags stock fell after a fatal incident on Monday.

A fatal incident on a Six Flags Entertainment roller coaster sent shares of the amusement-park operator on Tuesday to the lowest level in nearly 17 years.

Six Flags' stock (FUN) fell 14.4% to $10.20 - its lowest close since Dec. 16, 2009 - after an incident at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday afternoon left one dead and several injured, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Local news reports said a man was flung from the "Goliath" roller coaster.

Six Flags, in a statement, said it is cooperating fully with a local investigation.

"We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest's family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected," the company said in a statement.

Even before this incident, Six Flags has struggled. Its stock tumbled 16% after the release of second-quarter earnings on Aug. 6.

The stock has lost two-thirds of its value over the last three years, according to FactSet.

Last month, activist investor Jana Partners urged the company to explore a sale, according to the Wall Street Journal.
