DigitalBridge stock soars over the agreed offer price
SoftBank confirmed it's buying data-center investor DigitalBridge.
SoftBank is buying an investor in the data-center companies that are fueling the artificial-intelligence revolution.
SoftBank announced a $2.9 billion deal to buy DigitalBridge, which manages $108 billion of infrastructure assets. Bloomberg News first reported the deal.
SoftBank (JP:9984) has been steadily increasing its exposure to the AI trade, through its control of microchip designer ARM Holdings and its investment in OpenAI, the ChatGPT developer, while it sold out of its Nvidia stake (NVDA) in October.
"DigitalBridge is a leader in digital infrastructure, and this acquisition will strengthen the foundation for next-generation AI data centers, advance our vision to become a leading ASI platform provider, and help unlock breakthroughs that move humanity forward," said SoftBank's chairman and CEO, Masayoshi Son.
ASI is SoftBank's acronym for advanced superintelligence.
DigitalBridge, which says its portfolio covers one-third of U.S. hyperscaler leasing, will continue to operate as a separately managed platform, led by Marc Ganzi, its current CEO.
DigitalBridge's stock (DBRG) soared 31% to $18.26, above the $16 per share agreed offer.
