GM to lay off about 1,300 in Michigan as Bolt, Camaro end production

By Mike Murphy

General Motors Co. will cut more than 1,300 jobs at two auto plants in Michigan effective Jan. 1.

According to filings Thursday with state regulators, the automaker will lay off 945 workers at its Lake Orion, Mich., facility, and 369 at its Lansing Grand River assembly/stamping plant.

The Lake Orion layoffs had been announced in October. That facility assembles the electric Chevrolet Bolt, which will cease production at the end of the year.

Among other models, the Lansing Grand River plant produces Chevrolet Camaros, which GM will stop making in January.

GM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In November, the United Auto Workers ratified a new contract with GM following a months-long strike.

GM shares (GM) have surged more than 30% over the past month, but are up only 8% year to date, compared to the S&P 500's 23% gain in 2023.
