Contest to Succeed ECB Head Lagarde Is Officially a Two-Horse Race
By Paul Hannon
European governments are set to choose between two experienced and pragmatic economists from Spain and the Netherlands to succeed Christine Lagarde, who is stepping down as head of the European Central Bank in February.
A group of finance ministers from the 21 members of the eurozone said Friday that it had received two nominations for the job: Spain's Pablo Hernandez de Cos and Klaas Knot from the Netherlands.
The candidates will be considered by the Eurogroup at a meeting Monday, before European Union leaders make the final choice.
They next meet on Nov. 13, but that might be a little early to make a final call, since leaders are obliged to consult with the European Parliament and the ECB's governing council before reaching a decision.
