Canada Goods-Trade Surplus Widens to C$5.35 Billion in September

By Robb M. Stewart

OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade surplus with the rest of the world hit the widest in more than four years in September as shipments of oil and gold pushed exports to a fresh record high.

The country posted a goods-trade surplus of 5.35 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$2.82 billion, Statistics Canada said Wednesday. That is the biggest surplus since May 2022.

The median forecast among economists was for the surplus to grow to about C$6 billion after the balance widened in August to an upwardly revised C$4.95 billion.

Exports edged up 0.2% to C$78.55 billion in the latest month, while imports fell 0.3% to C$73.2 billion, Statistics Canada said.

Exports to the U.S., Canada's biggest market by a wide margin, increased 0.7%, while imports were up 0.4%. That widened Canada's longstanding surplus with its neighbor to C$12.33 billion in September from C$12.1 billion the month before.
