Midterm Elections: Referendums Divide Voters —— By Maya Davis

Many of the 145 referendums on state ballots put GOP and Trump priorities to a public test on Tuesday, and voters were split.

Voters backed greater abortion rights in three of four ballot fights, including a defeat of Missouri Republicans' attempt to resurrect most of the terminations ban. Nevada and Virginia added abortion rights to their constitutions, each with more than 62% support. In Idaho, voters rejected an abortion-rights measure 56% to 44%, maintaining the state's prohibition on abortion.

Symbolic measures declaring that noncitizens can't vote also passed in every state where the Associated Press has called them, including in Arkansas, Kansas, South Dakota and West Virginia, and Alaska. Measures requiring voters to provide identification passed in Ohio, North Carolina and Nevada, but failed in California and Colorado.

In a continuation of this cycle's redistricting battle, Missouri voters threw out the congressional map Republicans drew in 2025 and Maryland approved an amendment that could lead to new districts in 2028.
