Digital Realty, Goodman Target Stake in Australia's NextDC

By Stuart Condie

SYDNEY--Australia's NextDC said U.S. data-center owner Digital Realty Trust and local property developer Goodman Group teamed up in an attempt to buy nearly 10% of its stock, two weeks after it tumbled to a nearly nine-year low.

The ASX-listed data-center operator on Thursday said that Ackland Investments, which is co-owned by Digital Realty and Goodman, conducted a book build after the market closed on Wednesday.

Ackland tried to build a 9.9% stake at 9.50 Australian dollars, or US$6.66, a share, NextDC said.

The stock closed Wednesday at A$6.53. It was up 43% at A$9.32 shortly after Thursday's open.

NextDC said it did not know the outcome of the attempted book build. It called it an opportunistic move and said it had not received any takeover proposal.

"NextDC notes the statement by Goodman and Digital Realty (through their broker) to investors during the after-market book build that they have 'no intention of submitting a control proposal or making a takeover bid for the company at this time, but reserve their right to do so'," NextDC said in a market filing.

NextDC's shares fell by 42% on Oct. 21 after it said slashed its earnings guidance and flagged potential asset sales due to development delays at its M3 data center in Melbourne.
