EchoStar Shares Climb on WaPo Report that SpaceX Is In Talks to Buy Boost Mobile, Use Its Network
By Connor Hart
Shares of EchoStar climbed after The Washington Post reported that SpaceX has held talks with the parent company of Boost Mobile in recent months.
The stock rose 4.7% in premarket trading Monday. Through Friday's close, shares are down about 11% year to date.
The talks revolve around SpaceX's goal to operate a mobile network. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been personally involved, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month to discuss SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or gaining access to its network, according to the WaPo report, which cited two people familiar with the negotiations.
Access to Boost Mobile's network, which is leased from AT&T and T-Mobile US, would be a coup for SpaceX, the report said, allowing Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion.
