Chicago Business Activity Expands at Slower Pace in October
By Jessica Coacci
Business activity in the Chicago area expanded at a slower pace in October, a monthly survey showed.
The Chicago Business Barometer, compiled by MNI Indicators, fell to 55.3 in October from 58.8 the previous month. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected a reading of 56.0. A measurement below 50 indicates a contraction in activity.
The decline was driven by decreases in supplier deliveries, production, order backlogs and new orders, the survey said. The decrease was partially offset by an increase in employment.
The prices paid measure increased 8.9 points to its highest level since December of 2021. For the eighth consecutive month, no respondents reported lower prices paid than the previous month.
Production declined 5.2 points but remained in expansion, while new orders ticked down slightly.
