AbbVie 3Q Revenue Rises on Strength in Immunology, Neuroscience

By Kelly Cloonan

AbbVie's third-quarter revenue gained, bolstered by higher sales for its immunology and neuroscience drugs.

The pharmaceutical company also Friday boosted its profit outlook for the year, and raised its quarterly dividend. Both the third-quarter results and full-year guidance came in above Wall Street's expectations.

AbbVie's third-quarter revenue rose 10% to $17.4 billion, compared with FactSet analyst estimates of $17.32 billion.

In AbbVie's immunology portfolio, revenue climbed 16% to $9.17 billion, driven by arthritis and Crohn's disease treatments like Skyrizi, Rinvoq and Humira.

Revenue in the company's neuroscience portfolio gained 19% to $3.39 billion, while its oncology business reported a 0.8% uptick. Aesthetics revenue fell 1.4%.

Quarterly profit came in at $4.22 billion, or $2.37 a share, compared with $186 million, or 10 cents a share, a year earlier.

Earnings in the recent quarter were weighed down by 11 cents a share in acquired in-process research and development and milestones expenses, compared with a headwind of $1.50 per share in the year-ago period.

Adjusted earnings per share were $3.82, compared with analyst estimates of $3.73, according to FactSet.

For the full year, AbbVie now projects adjusted earnings per share of $13.95 to $13.99, compared with its previous guidance of $13.76 to $13.96. Wall Street expects adjusted earnings of $13.91 a share for the year.

The company had lowered its full-year outlook earlier this month to factor in acquired in-process research and development and milestones expenses. It also cut its forecast in July to account for its acquisition of Apogee Therapeutics.

The deal, which recently closed, adds Apogee's experimental drug zumilokibart, a potential rival to Dupixent from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Sanofi as a treatment for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema.

AbbVie also raised its quarterly dividend by 5.2%, to $1.82 a share. The new payout, equal to $7.28 a year, represents an annual yield of about 2.5% based on Thursday's closing price of $290.79. The dividend is payable on Feb. 16 to stockholders of record as of Jan. 15.
