Altria Lifts Earnings Outlook as 3Q Profit, Revenue Climb

By Connor Hart

Altria Group raised its full-year earnings outlook after reporting higher profit and revenue in the latest quarter, as the company's cigarette brands scooped up market share and it invested in its smoke-free portfolio.

The tobacco company posted a third-quarter profit of $2.52 billion, or $1.51 a share, compared with $2.38 billion, or $1.41 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings were $1.52 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $1.51 a share.

Revenue ticked up 1% to $6.13 billion.

Within Altria's smokable-products division, which includes Marlboro and Virginia Slims cigarettes, revenue edged 0.8% higher to $5.43 billion.

Revenue from the company's oral-tobacco business, which includes on! nicotine pouches, came in roughly flat at $688 million.

Chief Executive Sal Mancuso said Altria Group's cigarette brands are gaining market share. The company continues to invest in its smoke-free brands, including by launching new variants and flavors of its products, he added.

Looking ahead, Altria now expects adjusted earnings of $5.66 to $5.74 a share, compared with a prior outlook for $5.56 to $5.72 a share.

"Our strong performance through the first nine months and confidence in our full-year plan allowed us to raise our earnings guidance for the year," Mancuso said.

Shares climbed 1.4%, to $74, in premarket trading Thursday.
