ECB President Lagarde to Step Down Early

By Ed Frankl

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down in February, the bank said Thursday.

"ECB President Christine Lagarde today informed the governing council and the President of the European Council Antonio Costa that she will step down from her position on Feb. 7, 2027," the bank said in a statement.

Lagarde has led the central bank since 2019. Her term was due to conclude by the end of October next year. Her successor will be appointed by the European Council, the ECB said.

"To ensure a smooth transition to the next leadership of the ECB, the process for the appointment of her successor will be initiated today and will proceed without delay," Costa said.
