Mexico's Femsa Registers Higher 3Q Net Profit
By Anthony Harrup
MEXICO CITY--Retail and beverages conglomerate Fomento Economico Mexicano posted an 81% rise in third-quarter net profit amid solid sales and operating profit growth at the Oxxo convenience store chain and beverages unit Coca-Cola Femsa.
The company better known as Femsa reported profit of 10.57 billion Mexican pesos ($567 million) for the July-September period, up from MXN5.84 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Higher operating income, a foreign exchange gain and the absence of a year-earlier loss related to discontinued operations contributed to the growth.
Revenue rose 9.8% to MXN235.61 billion, operating profit increased 9.9% to MXN19.92 billion, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were up 13% at MXN34.83 billion.
Same-store sales growth at Oxxo Mexico picked up pace in the quarter, rising 9.2% from a year earlier with a 3.5% increase in customer traffic--the strongest in more than two years--and a 5.5% increase in average ticket.
"As we enter the final quarter of the year, we remain mindful that the consumer environment in Mexico continues to be soft, Brazil has faced some volatility recently and that we will face a more demanding comparison base in the coming quarters," Femsa Chief Executive Jose Antonio Fernández Garza-Lagüera said.
Revenue at Coca-Cola Femsa rose 11% in the third quarter, with a 5.3% rise in sales volume, and operating profit increased 15%.
Revenue was up 18% in the Americas & Mobility division, which includes Oxxo stores outside of Mexico and service stations in Mexico and the U.S. In Europe revenue fell 5.2% but was up 4% excluding currency effects, while health division revenue rose 7%.
