Visa Reports Higher 4Q Profit on Payment Volumes, Transactions Growth
By Elias Schisgall
Visa reported a higher profit and growing revenue in the fiscal fourth quarter boosted by an increase in payment volumes and processed transactions.
The payments company on Tuesday reported a profit of $6 billion, or $3.19 a share, compared with a profit of $5.09 billion, or $2.62 a share, a year earlier.
Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted earnings were $3.48 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $3.44 a share.
Revenue rose 13% to $12.14 billion. Analysts had been expecting $12.09 billion.
Payments volumes were up 9% year-over-year, while processed transactions rose 10% and cross-border volumes were up 14%. These increases drove Visa's revenue growth during the quarter, the company said.
Visa also lifted its dividend to 78 cents a share, up from 67 cents.
The new payout, a 16% increase equal to $3.12 a year, represents a 0.8% annual yield based on the company's Tuesday closing price of $401.86.
Shares fell 1.1% to $397.26 in after-hours trading. The stock closed down 0.6% and had gained 15% through the close.
The company in July said it would cut 2,600 jobs, largely in its technology and product teams, citing a need to streamline its operations and use artificial-intelligence to drive efficiency amid broader changes across the payments industry.
