Microsoft Extends Buyout Offers to Employees

By Elias Schisgall

Microsoft is extending buyout offers to a wide swath of its employees as the company continues to reshape its organization around artificial-intelligence.

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said Monday that the offer applies to employees in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, and India who rank at level 70 or below on the company's internal job ladder.

"This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support," Coleman wrote in a memo to staff posted to Microsoft's blog. "It also gives participating organizations another way to adapt their workforce to changing needs."

The buyout offer is only eligible for some organizations within Microsoft, Coleman said.

The move builds on Microsoft's efforts to simplify its internal organization. The company in April offered voluntary buyouts to long-tenured employees representing 7% of its total U.S. workforce, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Coleman said Monday that the new round of buyouts would include financial support and career-planning resources.

"The Voluntary Exit Offer reflects an important part of how we're evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter," she said.

Shares of Microsoft were up 1.1% at $530.57 as of midday Monday. The stock has gained 9.7% this year.
