Cemex 3Q Net Profit Rises on Higher Sales, Operating Gains

By Anthony Harrup

MEXICO CITY--Building materials company Cemex posted a 55% increase in third-quarter net profit as sales grew and operating gains rose.

Monterrey, Mexico-based Cemex reported profit of $407 million for the July-September period, up from $264 million in the year-earlier quarter and equivalent to 28 cents an American depositary share.

Sales rose 8% to $4.59 billion, lifted by higher prices and an increase in cement sales volume. Cement volumes increased 3% to 11.5 million metric tons. Aggregates volume was down 3% at 34.2 million tons, while ready mix concrete volume fell 2% to 11 million cubic meters.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, a measure of profitability, rose by 12% to $990 million, and operating profit grew by 19% to $652 million.

Cemex said proceeds from asset sales under its Project Cutting Edge have exceeded $200 million since the project was launched last year, including completed and announced sales. "The proceeds from these sales are intended to be recycled into more strategic and accretive investment opportunities," the company said.

Sales in Mexico were up 16% from the year-earlier quarter, with cement sales by volume up 7% on a solid residential sector and government-backed social programs including housing and rural roads, Cemex said. Industrial demand is expected to remain supported by higher infrastructure spending and residential construction.

In the U.S., sales rose 5% with cement volumes up 4%. "Demand continues to be led primarily by infrastructure, while industrial-sector demand, particularly related to the AI ecosystem and energy sector, continues to grow," Cemex said.
