Volkswagen to Partner With NXP Semiconductors for Chip Supply
By Dominic Chopping
Volkswagen Group has agreed to form a strategic partnership with NXP Semiconductors that will see the Dutch semiconductor manufacturer supply chips for Volkswagen's future generation of tech-heavy cars with increased software capabilities.
The agreement sees NXP become a strategic technology partner that will supply Volkswagen with microcontrollers--small computers on a single chip that connect sensors, collect and process data from specific areas of the vehicle and manage functions such as lighting and safety systems.
Volkswagen said the chips would be used in cars built on a future platform developed by its joint venture with Rivian and will feature across all of its brands and vehicle segments with the first vehicle on the new platform planned for 2027.
"The partnership is part of Volkswagen Group's broader semiconductor strategy," the German automaker said.
"Through direct, long-term partnerships with leading semiconductor companies, Volkswagen Group combines its automotive expertise with cutting-edge chip technology to strengthen supply resilience and jointly shape key technologies for future vehicle generations."
