Archer to Launch Air Taxis in Texas — Update
By Katherine Hamilton
Archer Aviation plans to launch air taxi networks in three Texas cities.
The electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft are slated to be used for air-taxi services in Austin, Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the aircraft company said Friday.
Archer still requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for its air taxi aircraft Midnight. It is in the final stages of that regulatory process.
The company plans to begin demo flights in Texas next year. The networks created in the three Texan cities are meant to allow it to scale commercial operations following approval.
The goal of the planned launches is to increase connectivity between major airports, business hubs and tourist destinations. Archer cited the Texas cities' high traffic volume as a potential benefit of the fleets.
The expansion comes after Boeing agreed to take a nearly 20% stake in Archer. The deal, agreed upon in August, is set to give Archer control of Boeing's flying-taxi venture Wisk Aero, its air-traffic software provider SkyGrid and its drone maker Insitu.
Archer, a California-based startup, recently completed the Northern California leg of its flight tour, which was meant to show how air taxis would work in urban areas. The tour flew into seven cities over a three-day period.
